Shane Filan Treats Fans at the SkyDome

Words By Ava Sharra Sumortin

There was a different kind of nostalgia last September 28 at the SM City North EDSA Skydome. An array of both new and old fans gathered at the venue for Shane Filan’s fan meet party and show. Of course, fans couldn’t help but reminisce those days when Westlife songs carried a lot of weight and are as unforgettable as the experiences that went along with those songs. Yes, things have definitely changed, but the love for old and new music will always be something that is constant.

“Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But that’s bull shit cause The Killers are in Manila!” declared vocalist Brandon Flowers in all his manly conviction. Dressed in a star-spangled button down shirt and leather jacket, the handsome singer of the equally handsome band may have taken some time to visit our country, but the wait was worth it.

There were probably 100 things we loved during the Rihanna show, but we listed the 4 most standout parts of the event. Why 4? Well…diamonds have 4 sides after all.

1. Rockstar 101
With eye popping motion editorials and elaborate staging, the Diamonds tour was one visual fest. With creative uses of the LED screen plus on cue stylings of pyro, the stagework for the show was top notch. Creating a captivating element that further enhances the massive Rihanna experience.

TONY BENNETT with daughter Antonia Bennett
and Ovation Productions' Renen and Cel De Guia.

Tony Bennett can be described in a lot of ways. Singer. Songwriter.  Crooner. Grammy Hall of Famer. Award winning musician. But if there’s one thing more apt than these descriptors, I think it’s “legend”. With a career spanning decades doting along countless music gems and numerous achievements as well in film and art, Bennett truly owns up to the title “legend”. That’s why it came as no surprise when the news broke out the man was staging his first-ever Manila show, people immediately came in multitudes.

A Walk Down Memory Lane With Martin Nievera

Words by Angela Prats
Photos by Kris Rocha

“A night, 30 years worth, of musical journey” is what Martin Nievera had us experience last Sept 13 at the Araneta Coliseum. Armed with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, the musical direction of Louie Ocampo, and a crowd ready to be swooned by the Concert King.

Opening the show were the X Factor Philippines contestants mentored by Martin Nievera singing a medley of pop songs for the audience to warm up to. And of course, Martin wasted no time starting the show with a bang. Literally, as a couple of pyro lit up the stage. The whole night was a like walking through Martin Nievera’s whole career as he shared with his us how his career had started and lasted all these years by calling out the people in the crowd he is thankful for in his fruitful existence in the showbiz.

All of Martin’s hit songs were performed beautifully with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra. I had to remind myself a couple of times throughout the show the orchestra accompaniment was real and live. It was just that good. And Martin just proved all over again to the entire Araneta crowd how much he lived up to the title of being the Concert King as he performed I believe more or less 30 songs in the 3 hour event with no signs of being tired.

4 GUYS [The Piano Guys Live In Manila]

Words by Manila Concert Scene
Photos by Kris Rocha

Internet sensation turned worldwide breakthrough act, The Piano Guys, were recently in town thanks to RandomMinds. And easily, the boys enamored those who saw them live during their September 7 show. The boys put together innovative arrangements for well-known pop songs from David Guetta, One Direction, Michael Jackson, Adele to classical masterpieces from Mozart.

L-R: Paul Anderson, Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson
& Al van der Beek, collectively known as The Piano Guys.
Ironically, The Piano Guys, who got their name from a piano store in St. George, Utah, are a quartet featuring only two musicians - only one being a pianist. Store owner Paul Anderson devised a Facebook promotional page and a YouTube channel featuring well-established, self-described “New Age Classical” pianist Jon Schmidt, who teamed up musically with Steven Sharp Nelson, an innovative cellist. Together, Schmidt and Nelson form the musical core of The Piano Guys, with Anderson - who has since closed the store. Al van der Beek, the fourth “Guy,” heads up the group’s studio operations, and also assists in co-writing and arranging, as well as percussion and vocal texturing. They create their music videos all together.

In a special press session with them, The Piano Guys shared they began making music videos for fun. The spectacular videos, which have so far netted over 130 million YouTube views (and 500,000 new views a day), are essentially divined carefully crafted using stunning production. But beyond what you can see, it’s really the music that keeps them magical. Thus earning them accolades in the industry. Their hit self-titled debut album, released early this year on Sony Masterworks, has been #1 on the Billboard New Age Chart for the last 23 weeks and remains on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart. Their unique style has garnered rave reviews and performances on The Today Show, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Katie, CBS This Morning, Fox & Friends among others, and of course, in their Philippine show.

Nostalgia is a beautiful thing.

And jazz legends, George Benson and Patti Austin seem to have mastered that.  By showcasing their rich discography which encompassed decades, the two – together and as individuals – created a romantic evening that celebrated the beauty of the yesteryears. A poignant evening filled with stirring anthems, emotional tributes and breathtaking songs that only the two can truly deliver. And delivered very well at that.

Throughout the whole night, Pitbull gyrated, thrusted and swung his hips like it were nothing. And the ladies loved every minute of it. The global popstar sure knows how to show some international love. Coursing through a dancey, sultry show that no one else could probably deliver, the Latino musician/rapper/ sex symbol proved that he is indeed Mr.Worldwide. And damnson, was it fun.

Armed with his Miami flavor, Pitbull banded together a selection of his hits as well as collabs to land one spicy party. From “Give Me Everything” to “Dance Again” to a mash-up of “Hello - Party Rock Anthem – Miami” to “Get It Started”, Pitbull singlehandedly rocked the MOA Arena. But beyond the dance hits, it was sorta impressive how Pitbull racked up a collection of songs from his Latin Pop background. The Billboard chart-topper dropped tracks such as “Culo”, “Mentirosa” and “Danza Kuduro” in between his hiphop hits. And this Latin flavor was served deliciously. After all, the man was backed up by his merry men of musicians hailing from Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico and Puerto Rico – doesn’t get any Latino as that.
