Concert Review: Sergio Mendes Makes Pinoys Swoon

In the frenetic, fast-paced world that we live in, isn’t it nice to listen to music that invigorates the soul and relaxes the mind? That’s what bossa nova does to me. I grew up listening to Brazilian jazz legend Sergio Mendes for as long as I can remember, thanks in part to my dad who would pop in Sergio cassette tapes whenever we would go on multiple hour road trips.

Taking Back Sunday Live in Manila concert review

“Taking Back Sunday Live in Manila”
By Bianchi Mendoza

Taking Back Sunday burst onto the rock scene with the release of their first full-length album TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS in 2002. Hits like “Cute without the E” and “You’re So Last Summer” put them on the alternative rock/pop punk map, opening for Blink-182 and playing at the VANS WARPED TOUR.  They released their fifth eponymous album, “Taking Back Sunday” last year. They rocked Manila for the first time last April 13. The band’s original line-up has gone on tour for the first time in a long time, honouring us Filipinos by making us their only stop in Asia.

Concert Review: Manila gets Party Rocked LMFAO-style

Ever wondered what the line Sorry For Party Rocking” really means? Redfoo, ½ of the  ultimate party duo LMFAO explains. “Sorry for party rocking is a person’s excuse for having fun. “It’s the excuse you give when someone complains,” he continues. “Let’s say your parents say ‘stop shuffling upstairs you’re waking me up!’ You can now just say ‘Sorry for party rocking, Mom…sorry for having fun.’”As if the duo responsible for the insanely infectious dance tunes,  Party Rock Anthem and Sexy And I Know It (just to name a few)  would ever need to apologize for forging a new generation of global party people with their brilliant music. You’ve got to admit, LMFAO has taken over not just the party scene but the whole music industry as well. Anyone with a pair of eyes can hear the Party Rock Anthem playing in dance clubs, on TV variety shows and even on cellphones.

It’s hard to believe Australian-pop superstar Olivia Newton-John’s first trip to Manila was during her one-night concert at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum last March 31, 2012. But it was, and for her legions of fans (of all ages, we must add), who showed up to watch her perform, it was nothing short of a dream come true.

Avenged Sevenfold in Manila this April 26

Each song in Avenged Sevenfold’s latest album “Nightmare” has become an ode of praise and love to their brother, The Rev, who unexpectedly passed away during the making of the album. The band though halted by grief and sorrow, decided to continue on with finishing each tracks, channeling their pain into songs that will serve as their brother’s legacy to the world. The Rev was recently awarded in the second annual Revolver Golden God Awards as Best Drummer and the band received the award in his behalf. Being an astounding musician and extremely talented drummer, The Rev would be irreplaceable. Fans of Avenged Sevenfold would never forget the gift that The Rev shared through their music.

Concert Review: Hanson Heats Up Manila

Title: Hanson Heats Up Manila

Back in the 90s, when Internet was a mere illusion, teen idols were plain images their fans would see in BOP, Teen Beat, Tiger Beat, and other teenybopper magazines. Their supporters would catch them on TV every so often, but with foreign concerts extremely scarce back then meeting them in person seemed like it would never happen. With the resurgence of all these 90s bands making a comeback, 90s kids (like this writer) are given a renewed sense of vigor, that their childhood fantasies can, in fact, become a reality.

Coca-Cola Concert: A Concert Full Of Smiles

Edited by Jamie Ortega

To celebrate their 100 years of making people happy, Coca-Cola Philippines organized a free concert last March 23, 2012 entitled “Concert ng Bayan”. The festival featured some of the best local acts in the country including a special performance by international R and B superstar, Craig David. In keeping with their promise to make the Filipino people happy, the selection of  performers to be included in the concert was done through a survey on their Facebook LIKE page: (

The people who couldn’t make it to the venue viewed the concert online over at Check out 15 of the coolest moments from the show. How did you find the show? LET US KNOW!

1) DJ Q-York whet the audience’s appetite with a riveting compilation of R and B hits.

2) Fresh from their sold-out concert, comedy duo Jose and Wally opened the show.  MYX VJs Bianca Roque, Chino Lui-Pio, Mike Advincula, PBB host Robi Domnigo, and  Monster RX 93.1 DJ Gino Quillamor took turns hosting the festival.

3) Everyone’s favorite pop-rock band Callalily performed their hearts out with some of their best hits including Stars, Magbalik and Susundan. Frontman Kean Cipriano kept the girls screaming with his heartfelt performance of Magbalik. In the middle of Magbalik the charismatic singer strummed the guitar while asking the audience to put their cellphones in the air. For their next numbers the band performed alongside former Sugarfree frontman Ebe Dancel, their performances churning out unbelievable musical chemistry as they sang each other’s songs, BBS’ Wala Na Tayo and Sugarfree’s Tulog Na. In keeping with the show’s theme Kean wore a red pair of pants. Do we smell an album collaboration sometime soon? We hope so!

4) The onstage collaborations kept on coming! Sandwich paid tribute to Eraserheads’ epic hit “With A Smile” by performing it, an action which made the crowd dutifully show their pearly whites. The musical duo became a trio as soon as Jay Durias appeared onstage. Sandwich frontman Raymond joked, “If you know the words, if you think you know them more than I do, can you sing with me?” Don’t you love it when rock icons are so down to earth?

5) Old school met new school as 6cyclemind performed with Eunice of Grancenote and Kleggy of Ang Banda ni Kleggy. Frontman Tutti Caringal asked the audience to sing the 6 Cyclemind song “Sandalan” with him which they did, and in tune, too! Pretty amazing!

6) The age-old metal versus hiphop rivalry has been over and done with. Need further proof? Rock blended with rap as Wolfgang lived up to its’ name and rocked the audience to the corewith a fierce performance of Halik Ni Hudas. The band was joined by prolific rapper Gloc-9. Who says rap and rock are worlds apart? We hope there are more collaboration like this in the future.

7) Heir apparent to Master Rapper Francis M, Gloc-9 ruled the stage with the song Hari Ng Tondo. He was joined by GMA 7’s Protégé contestant, Denise Barbacena. Whoever said OPM is dead? Judging by the sheer talent onstage it IS LIVE AND KICKING!!

8) One of the most applauded performances that night was by the band Parokya Ni Edgar. They entertained the crowd with some of their biggest hits including, “Halaga”, “Yes, Yes, Show” “Picha Pie”, and “Buloy.”  The band added a dash of comedic flavor to each of their performances, producing a lively concoction which the audience definitely enjoyed.

9) Electronic pop artist and teen heartthrob Somedaydream proved why he is being dubbed as the country’s answer to Owl City with his lively rendition of his hit single Hey Daydreamer.  Somedaydream’s talent manager Champ Lui Pio is right, it is time embrace a new kind of music flavor, and the electronic pop artist is setting the wheels in motion.“Thank you so much guys, galling nyo kumanta, yeah,” he said before wrapping up his performance.

10) The Coke concert became a royal event with the addition of Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo. The female performer sang a mixture of slow and fast hits like “End of Time” by Beyonce, “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj, “Someone Like You” by Adele and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You. Sarah displayed an amazing flair for rapping during Super Bass. We swear there is NOTHING she cannot do! She replaced the lyrics of Super Bass with “Please tell us who the F I is, I am Sarah G” Yes, and there will be nobody like you! Before singing I Will Always Love You Sarah expressed her love for the late Whitney Houston by saying “We lost another icon but of course her beautiful music will remain in her hearts.

11) Mr. Pure Energy proved why he is idolized by hundreds of younger generations of artists with his heartfelt performance of Walang Hanggan. The mood shifted from romantic to electrifying as soon as he was joined onstage by his son Gab. They performed the Jay Sean tune 2012 which made the crowd do just do that -party on 2012! Gary V apologized for all the sweat falling from his body. We didn’t mind because what they did was nothing short of epic.

12) Mega trio Gary V, Sarah G and Somedaydream performed Coca-Cola Philippines 100th Anniversary theme song, “Tuloy”. May Coke continue to be a part of our lives for the next 100 years! What is your favorite Coke memory? Share it with us!

13) Making it feel like it’s Christmas (in the middle of summer), a building projection appeared atop the building of Two E-Com Center. The visual projection chronicled Coke’s campaigns throughout the years. The visual spectacle was followed by a dazzling  7-minute firework display.

14) It’s been four years since his last performance in Manila, and with that in mind British R and B superstar Craig David certainly made up for his absence by performing some of his  greatest hits: “Don’t Love You No More”, “Unbelievable”, “7 Days” “Walking Away”, “What’s Your Flava”. The buff and talented R and B act sang 8 songs, capping his performance with his latest hit “Insomnia”. During the press conference a couple of hours ago Craig said he dedicates Insomnia to his Filipino fans because they inspire him to keep him awake as he writes songs. How sweet! Craig also spoke about Tuberculosis, one of his charities, and encouraged everyone in the audience to know more about how to prevent the disease.

15) Capping the musical extravaganza was Rico Blanco, Chicosci, Never the Strangers, Spongecola, and Pupil. Talk about 13 hours of pure musical satisfaction! The show started at 3 pm and ended at 4 am the next day. Over 50,000+ people were in attendance for one of the biggest concerts in Philippine music history. We cant wait till next year!

Thank you to Wilbros Live and Coca-Cola Philippines for making all of this possible.
